BARTLEBY THE SCRIVENER (ENGLISH)
BARTLEBY THE SCRIVENER
Herman Melville
«Bartleby the Clerk» was first published, anonymously and in two parts, in the November and December 1853 issues of Putnam’s Magazine . In 1856, with minor changes, it was included in Melville’s book The Piazza Tales , along with «The Piazza», «Benito Cereno», «The Lightning Rod Man», «The Enchanted» and «The Bell Tower». It is believed that Melville may have been partly inspired by the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson ; Some critics have noted parallels with Emerson’s essay The Transcendentalist . The story had little initial success among both readers and critics, although its importance and recognition have continued to increase since then.
